How I Made My First Income Online [The Big Black Book]

It sounds like hype.

You know, when I pop open another email that reads the [featured image]

It’s almost unbelievable. Did he really just say $10,000/month online?

Truth is you can make [a lot of] money online. The only missing piece is how the expert doesn’t reference a lot of the background work and months of slaving away on the computer.

But I digress. Making money online feels really, re..ally good. The first time I made money online was as a result of my guest post on Content Marketing Up.

And my confidence to write was not the only driving force with my first income.

You see, I had been online for quite some time…in some ways but was distracted by offline activities. This year, all of that was going to change.

Prior to that week, I was reading old emails and came across Jon Morrow’s. I thought, you know what, today, I am going to go through Jon’s old emails.

While going through the emails, I saw a link that pointed me to this:

jon morrow's big black book

I went, woah, how in the world did I miss that???

So I read the email, and bam, I landed on the Big Black Book. The Big Black Book is a wonderful resource that showed you the best blogs you can guest blog on, handpicked by Jon Morrow and his staff.

I felt confident that this wasn’t a random search, but Jon Morrow’s personal recommendation for places to guest post.

I bought the course, [I am not an affiliate] and was subscribed to another healthy bonus from Jon. That email series taught step-by-step how to make the best use of the Big Black Book.

One big lesson I have learnt from making my first income online is you always have to be at your best.

Before making my pitch to Content Marketing Up, I wanted to do a quick write-up and get the title “I have been published here.” But from reading Jon Morrow’s email series, I changed my mind and decided to be at my best.

Turns out that I was fascinated by Michael Hyatt’s sales page for his “Best Year Ever” program and I made a case study out of it. You can find the article here.

Immediately I sent the piece, Michael asked “how much do you charge per article?”

I was excited and it did not just end with that email but an actual phone call. At the end of the day, I ended up writing my first article for Michael for $300.

Obviously, this happened because I followed the advice from Big Black Book and also did a good job with the post and I’d like to share with you three principles for making your first income online if you are wondering where to start

  1. Always, always watch out for opportunities: opportunities can be for growth, to hone your skill or an opportunity to build your credibility and get in front of decision makers like that email I got from Jon.

watch out for opportunities

People get online and want to make money in a day. It doesn’t work that way,

Don’t fall for the “Make Money Online in 3 days” scam. Just as you didn’t learn to speak or write in a single day, everything takes a process and making money online is no different.

  1. Be prepared before you get the opportunity: there is a really beautiful quote I find very necessary to share in Principle two and it is:

Be prepared before the opportunity shows up

Get the necessary skills, invest in yourself, be disciplined enough to read that article, offer to be a volunteer for an opportunity to get your hands dirty. Increase your luck. Be prepared.

  1. Always be at your best: Sighting opportunities and taking advantage of these opportunities are only two parts of the equation. To create lasting opportunities, one that you can apply for leverage in your business, always be at your best.

Always do your Best . Vector hand-written lettering

Go the extra mile with your service. If you promised to deliver the work in “three days,” get it done and send it over on “Day two.” Don’t put yourself at the mercy of your clients, but let them understand that you value their business.

If the opportunity is free and you have accepted it, deliver as though it was paid for. My guest post for Content Marketing Up was not always on the first page of his site. But recently, Michael changed the site design and decided to feature my article on the homepage, leading to increased exposure for me.

When you make your first income online, it doesn’t stop there. If you know how to maintain the relationship, it goes from there and becomes a situation where you gain a customer/friend for life. It’s that simple.

Oh, while we are on it, if you need help with creating content for your blog, book and business, click here and we will take it from there.

How did you make your first income online? Was it by creating and selling your first digital product, offering your services, through a guest post or volunteer opportunity? I’d love to know in the comments.

Did you love this post? Show some love and give it a share :))

It feels sweet to be on your blog this morning, Hannah and thanks for the mail I got from you 😉

I have known Jon and of course, I read his blog almost daily.

Michael Chibuzor’s blog is a wonderful resource for writers as well. Michael has been a great pal and an author on my blog.

My first Income online was back in 2009 when I promoted a Clickbank DIY solar product. It generated about $300 and that fueled me up.

Well, due to difficulties in online business in Cameroon (back then), I completely dropped and only came back fully in 2011, when I created EasyRetweet.com. The site was sold out for $13.5k, ushering me into real blogging on the 21st August 2012.

Like you mentioned, don’t end with your first income. I have made much more since then through blogging and creating of my own products.

Thanks for sharing those three principles.

Better days are ahead, Hannah so let’s keep giving
